Featured here is a carved image of the Buddha Maitreya
of truly uncommon beauty. It was hand carved in Nepal by
a master craftsmen, whose family has been making wooden
religious art in the Kingdom of Nepal for generations.
This statue is new, the procuct of an artistic legacy
that stretches back over 4 centuries. A work like this
can take 3 months or more to complete, and after the
carving is done, it is meticulously hand painted
according to the exacting specifications of traditional
Vajrayana iconography.
This is the future Buddha, Maitreya, who is known in
Tibetan as Jampa. Maitreya is currently in the Tushita
Heaven, where he teaches the highly evolved beings who
live there. He is waiting for the time when he will
incarnate as the next Buddha of this eon. When the time
comes it will be the fulfillment of his aspiration,
formed long, long ago, to provide the highest service
possible to sentient beings - teaching them how to
permanently extinguish suffering.
This exceptional wooden Maitreya image was hand carved
in Nepal. The Newari artisans of Kathmandu are
absolutely unmatched in their ability to create sublime
devotional art. This piece is exemplary, a really
special statue. Maitreya's face exudes serenity. His
hands are raised in the gesture of teaching and naga
flowers rise over each shoulder. These are an allusion
to the prophecy concerning Maitreya's attainment of
complete enlightenment. Of course Maitreya's most
distinctive iconographic feature is his body posture.
Often referred to as "western style", this position
seated on a chair or throne, is interpreted by some as a
possible indication that the future Buddha will be born
in the West. Who knows... and let's face it, that kind
of speculation is fairly pointless.
Wherever Maitreya turns up, and despite all the benefits
his mere presence can provide, people are still going to
have to practice the teachings. The enlightened ones
have always been very clear about that point.
