This is a nice contemporary image of
the Goddess Saraswati. Saraswati as the Goddess of
learning and wisdom is one of the myriad forms of the
divine mother in Hinduism. Saraswati is the feminine
counterpart of Brahma, one of the three main male Gods
in Hinduism - the other two, Vishnu and Shiva, round out
the "trinity" of classical Hinduism.
Despite Brahma's importance it is in
fact Saraswati who is the far more popular member of
this divine couple. She is the dynamic and approachable
counterpart to the aloof and static nature of Brahma.
Her images are to be found not only in temples and home
shrines, but very commonly a statue or painting of her
will grace classrooms whether it is a place for studying
fine arts, the hard sciences or any other field of
learning. Saraswati embodies genius and virtuosity and
for that reason she is generally heralded as the patron
deity of students.
This piece shows her in a four armed
form with a style and appearance that has been rendered
according to classical iconographic specifications. She
is shown standing under an ornate aureole, which is
meant to indicate the aura of effulgent light that
surrounds her. Just behind her the peacock that is her
"vahana" or vehicle can be seen. Naturally, she is
dressed in the fine garments and jewelry you would
expect of such an esteemed goddess.
