The
"singing bowls" are traditionally constructed of
a 7 metal alloy which when struck or rubbed
produce a resonant humming tone. In the absence
of any precise historical records, information
pointing to the exact period in which these
sorts of tone producing bowls were first
manufactured has been lost with the passage of
time. It is certain though, that the techniques
required to produce utensils such as bells and
gongs of similar composition were well developed
and in practice in Asia at least 2500 years ago.
Equally obscure is information revealing what
particular rituals or practices may have
incorporated the use of these bowls in any
traditional contexts. To say that their exact
uses are shrouded in secrecy is perhaps a bit
melodramatic, but there is something to that
explanation as well. The bowls are regularly
seen being used as receptacles for alter
offerings and even more mundane household uses.
The use of instruments such as bells, cymbals,
gongs, etc. in meditative practices and other
rituals are quite common. Further the concepts
of sound and vibration as the means of creation,
transformation, etc. are common doctrinal
features of Buddhism and Hinduism, and many
other world religions, including the
Judo-Christian tradition for that matter.
It is probably safe to say that the sound
produced by these bowls is not mere coincidence.
While the singing tones which the bowls emit may
not have any prescribed uses in modern monastic
ritual, it is not at all unlikely that certain
yogins may make use of the bowls in their
private practices - perhaps in conjunction with
the visual generation of certain mandalas etc.
There are those who ascribe to the belief that
"all" is vibration. Stars, mountains, plants,
animals and people all have a particular
vibratory rate. The organs of the human body
also have their individual vibratory rates -
when everything is in synch we are "at ease" and
healthy. However, from time to time it may
happen that things fall out of synch, at which
point "disease", or illness manifests. Many
people believe that the bowl can help
"resynchronize" our bodies' own natural rhythms,
due to the principle known as "the collective
arrangement of phases", which states that two
entities each operating on a cycle of phases
will come into synchronization after being in
prolonged proximity. The idea that sound can be
used as therapy is widely acknowledged and is
one of the main tenets of vibrational medicine.
That sound may directly effect consciousness is
also widely accepted.
Whatever you believe, and all religious and
philosophical orientations aside, nearly
everyone finds these bowls and their mysterious
sounds somehow innately attractive if not
completely spellbinding. See for yourself.
