"Om Mani
Padme Hung" Bracelet
This
sterling silver bracelet has the mantra "Om Mani
Padme Hung" in 24K gold plated Tibetan script.
This is the preeminent mantra in Tibetan
Buddhism. It fills prayer wheels, is carved in
wood and stone throughout the Buddhist Himalaya,
and seems to never be far from the lips of
devout Tibetans. The mantra is closely
associated with Chenrezig (Sanskrit:
Avalokiteswara). Chenrezig is the very
embodiment of compassion, and as many of you
know, His Holiness the Dalai Lama is considered
to be an emanation of Chenrezig by Tibetan
Buddhists.
Though he is a world leader whose country has
been taken away and claimed by another nation,
and whose people have suffered all manner of
atrocities at the hands of the invaders, he
remains steadfast in his conviction that
non-violence and compassion are the only real
and lasting means to resolve conflict.
The
mantra, pronounced "Om Mani Peme Hu" by
Tibetans, has certain vibratory qualities, which
are meant to evoke compassion in us. Clearly a
useful means to a desirable end. If a person
were wearing such a bracelet as this, hopefully
every time they looked down at their wrist, the
site of this mantra would bring them back to
mindfulness. A reminder that personal and global
change depends in large part on compassion.
