Tibetan door covers are decorative and
functional and this has earned them a place as
an ubiquitous accessory in almost all Tibetan
homes and monasteries. Even nomads tending sheep
or yaks in the most remote pastures will very
likely have a cloth curtain something like this
one over the door to their yurt or tent.
The
door covers serve to keep dust and insects out
and in cold weather even the light weight covers
make a noticeable difference in temperature by
keeping cold drafts out and sealing heat in to
some degree. They are usually embellished with
some decorative motif. Sometimes it is a simple
geometric pattern, while other times more
elaborate designs - nearly always pertaining to
Tibetan Buddhism are employed. Door Covers are
used on inside doors as well as those leading
outdoors. They make nice additions to personal
shrines at home.
This
door cover is rich in Tibetan Buddhist
symbolism, and features the Tibetan Windhorse
emblem as the central theme. This symbol has its
origin in the fact that Tibet had a deeply
rooted 'horse culture", which is to say that the
horse played a part of great importance in the
Tibetan life ways. In Tibetan culture a fine
horse became a symbol of everything positive -
good luck and prosperity. The wind horse seen
here carries a load of wish fulfilling jewels,
as it swiftly goes about subduing negative
forces.
The
8-Auspicious symbols are also very skillfully
embroidered in bright colors on the left and
right sides of the main panel. The top has an
ornamental ruffle to add the final touch to what
we think you'll agree is a very fine example of
this useful traditional item.
This door cover is 35" wide by 72" high
