This box pendant is a
contemporary take on the classic
Tibetan Ga'u or amulet box. It
is sterling silver with the
mantra "om mani peme hung" in
gold plated letters running
vertically on the face of the
pendant.
The sides are embellished with
two dorjes. The dorjes are
above and below a spiral design
which is typically used in
Himalayan Buddhist art to depict
the ajna chakra or third eye of
the Buddhas.
It also opens up and has a
compartment for relics, personal
prayers or other small objects
invested with blessings or
protective power.
The mantra, "om mani peme hum",
is the six syllable invocation
or prayer of the divine being,
Chenrezig (Sanskrit:
Avalokiteswara). Chenrezig can
be thought of as pure compassion
personified. His Holiness the
Dalai Lama is considered to be
an emanation of Avalokiteswara
by Tibetan Buddhists.
